Let’s make valuable this amazing place: the dream is to create a bronze statue and a stone altar to celebrate religious rituals or simply take a breath and admire the beauty of nature.
In Piandarca is already been built an enormous natural TAU, illuminated by soft light at night.

“The Preach’s Path”
In this area, where at present rises the big TAU, we want to build the “stone altar” and the Saint’s statue.
A pedestrian and cycling route, that chains Assisi, Santa Maria Degli Angeli and Cannara
Specially designed with signs and geo-references, the path links Superior Basilica of Assisi, St. Francis’ Woods, Piandarca and its historical path.
The 15 – km Itinerary ideally reunites Giotto’s painting of the Preach to the area where the magic took place.

This famous event “one of the kindest and holy…that faith and poetry remember” (A. Fortini, Vita Nova of St. Francis). It has inspired universal geniuses, painters and musicians: the most famous piece of the cycle of paintings regarding St. Francis’ life in the Superior Basilica of Assisi.
Also, Benozzo Gozzoli’s expertise has represented the Preach in the church of St. Francis in Montefalco.
“The Chant and the floating of the birds” was poetically celebrated by Hungarian compositor Franz Listz, who asked the Sanit to forgive him for having depleted the original text.
Piandarca is alive evidence of Franciscan fraternity’s origins and valuable heritage of Umbria’s tradition. It has preserved the Franciscan message of harmony with the creation: a universal value that belongs to the entire world.

PIANDARCA, "HISTORICAL PATH"
The wonderful place where St. Francis preached to the birds
Piandarca is a natural area of around 40 acres placed in Umbria (Italy’s green heart), in Cannara’s municipality. Its toponym has an ancient history, its first appearances are in documents from 1200. Piandarca is a flat strip of land, surrounded by a silent and unspoiled landscape. A singular 360-degrees view allows to admire the encircling hilltop towns without any difficulty. This is a gorgeous piece of the scenery of enormous historical value. Indeed it’s known to have hosted one of the most famous moments of st. Francis’ life: The Preach To The Birds.
The ‘historical path’, bordered by green patches of native trees, is about 2 kilometres long. A secular tradition shows this to be the one travelled by the most loved Saint in the spring of 1221, after the preach to the people of Cannara and the first idea of the Third Order of Continents (today Francis’ Secular Order ). He went towards Bevagna and here, walking down the track, a flock of birds took his attention. The Saint, amazed by this splendid scene was inspired and composed the famous Preach, that represented the most poetic moment of his life. (Fioretti, ch.XVI).

PIANDARCA’S DREAM
An outdoors shrine devoted to St. Francis and his Preach
Contribute to making the dream of many come true. The funds received will be collected by Cannara’s Parish. Donations will be used for the construction of the statue, of the celebratory altar, for the arrangement of all the areas that determine the outdoor sanctuary, in addition to the maintenance of the site in the next 5 years.
